You're probably hearing of Tom Laverty before ever hearing Tom Laverty. I first heard him before seeing him. In the University Center on NMU's campus a few years ago, I had a 20-minute break between commitments. Piano tones enticed me into the lounge area, and there I saw a slender guy with a scruffy beard and dark-rimmed glasses caressing the keys on that old baby grand. Nobody else around. I eased onto the couch and gazed out the big windows at the Northern Naturally scene. Rhythms, tempos, melodies sent me. The piano man smoothly transitioned through several styles—jazz, classical, rock, blues, rag—sometimes pounding the chords, other times tinkling with aching beauty and suspense. I looked at my watch. Twenty minutes gone. Had to go. The piano man had not paused nor hesitated the entire time.
